PLAYLIST SHORTLIST: Listen in on week of May 15th
If you read my weekly post that had its inaugural push last Monday, you know this is the result of the roll through the weekend of tuning in on quality tracks and long players that dropped on Friday. In this case May 12th.
As the new queue of music uploads from Singapore through to the States, here are some tunes that made the Playlist Shortlist for my week of May 15th from that last round over the past weekend:
As the new queue of music uploads from Singapore through to the States, here are some tunes that made the Playlist Shortlist for my week of May 15th from that last round over the past weekend:
NICK MURPHY Feat. KAYTRANADA - 'Your Time'
The track is part of an EP called MISSING LINK, that itself dropped mid-week last week, complete with visual trailer like a seventies fever dream of THE SHINING in LA, signaling the triumphant return of the recently rebranded, fka Chet Faker. In a song that has the funk reminiscent of Mayer Hawthorne's collaboration with SebastiAn of Ed Banger ('Love In Motion'), this ramps up the swagger and sex appeal with his lyrical pleas to the song's mysterious love interest while the man from Montreal KAYTRANADA delivers a bassline rhythm production that would have made me say yes to whatever Murphy is peddling from the first full wave of those dreamy dark beats. " You don't know that your time is something I need to have / Breaking all the rules because I have to have you bad."
I'll take it and raise Mr. Murphy when he rolls through Detroit in September to hear this at full volume live.
AMBER MARK - 'Way Back'
This song has been floating around for about half a year but is a true jewel in the full EP from NYC's Amber Mark called 3:33AM. Quality track to help 'wake up' your love of music with a nod to soulful house. As a stark contrast to her throaty grit mix of world blues beats meets urban singer / songwriter from her other standout tracks 'Lose My Cool' and 'S P A C E', this track stand on its own and is transcendant.
As a result, the artist is truly doing her namesake, making a mark to be noticed and appreciated for this EP and a massive career ahead of her if she continues to deliver healthy doses of crossover R&B that sounds wholly original and still familiar.

FLEET FOXES - 'Fool's Errand'
I get the feeling that the band holes themselves up in some northwestern abandoned cave or outpost near the border of Canada to get this sound that comes off so outside of what is offered in the American music landscape. The album is peppered with references to the mythology of the Middle Ages and apt longing for other oceans and places from around the globe. Swoony, headstrong guitarstrums that you'll want to take up on that next cross-country drive or trek you didn't know you were planning.
BREAKBOT - 'Mystery' | 'Busy P ' 'Genie (Feat. Mayer Hawthorne)'
Ed Banger Records has been a delicious go to for sublime funk and electronic for what seems like forever and stands at almost 15 years dominating in the indie industry. Two standout tracks from this new collection ED REC 100 showcase the brand's nod to nostalgia but what sounds like it channeled it from another electronic plane. Breakbot released this groove-heavy track 'Mystery' at the end of last year and still gets heavy rotation.
Speaking of Ann Arbor, MI's own Mayer Hawthorne earlier in the post, he lends his falsetto-tinged vocals to this track with Ed Banger Records main main Busy P (Pedro Winter) for the track 'GENIE' that came out earlier this year..
This is one of those collections you'll keep circling back to, mining for hot hits in the weeks and months ahead.

NERINA PALLOT - 'Stay Lucky'
Pallot is one of those mercurial artists who pushes her sound but has the ability to capture lightning in a bottle when she delivers emotive Brill Building, Carole King-tinged moments like the one heard with this. Looking forward to many more in the months ahead with digits crossed it delivrs on par and better from the stunning Year of the Wolf that came out in 2011.
Serendiptously, I had a friend of mine recently request a playlist from me to help her through a batty few months that have passed and I made sure to add a tune from that album -- 'This Will Be Our Year' -- that I go back to to give a eff the world uptick to my disposition in tough times. This WILL be our year with folks like Pallot and others coming to the forefront with new longplayers and tracks like the ones above.
Sure enough a reason to keep checking in weekly for what is being listened to and sharing with me what hits on New Music Friday for all of us to love...
